Yaqut Resigned as He Awaits Verdict in Hajj Quota Corruption Case
Former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said he has surrendered everything to Allah SWT while waiting for the Jakarta Corruption Court panel of judges to reach a decision. He attended the follow-up hearing on Friday (21/8/2026) where the KPK prosecutors were slated to respond to his objection note. Yaqut is confident the judges will assess the case objectively, fairly, and wisely.
Yaqut insisted he had never ordered anyone to seek profits from organizing the hajj, including through any fast-track fees. He also stressed that the distribution of additional hajj quotas must be based on an agreement with the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is the highest authority.
That agreement is laid out in a memorandum of understanding he signed together with the Saudi Minister of Hajj on 8 January 2024. Without Saudi approval, he said, any amount of quota distribution simply can't happen.
