Why is being a mother so expensive in the United States?
Motherhood in the US comes with a staggering price tag. From childbirth to childcare, costs are much higher than in other wealthy nations. Even with insurance, a routine delivery can cost thousands, and out-of-network charges can soar into tens of thousands. The US also has a high maternal mortality rate, especially for Black women, and is one of the few rich countries without guaranteed paid maternity leave. After the baby arrives, childcare can eat up nearly 40% of a family's income. It's a heavy financial burden that changes how many view the system.
