Why do some of us act like we can’t enjoy a good laugh about ourselves?
There’s something that really gets to me about our community. Every so often, I stumble on a lighthearted video where someone pokes fun at a familiar aspect of our faith in a gentle way, and honestly, I find it funny. Assalamu alaikum, it’s refreshing to sometimes chuckle at our own quirks instead of being serious all the time. I recall a clip showing how packed the masjid gets, to the point where one brother almost climbed onto another’s back during salah. Another was just about a guy wearing mismatched socks to the mosque. No disrespect at all, just relatable, innocent humor. But nearly every time, one of the first comments is someone scolding that these jokes shouldn’t be made. I mean, come on… we’re human. We can share a laugh. In fact, I think this sort of humor actually brings us closer because it’s rooted in shared moments we all know. Not every playful joke is mockery or disrespect. Sometimes people are simply enjoying themselves and bonding with one another.
