Salaam! What does Islam say about the fate of non-believers?

Salaam alaikum! I’m not a Muslim myself, but I’m genuinely curious about Islam and I hope it’s okay to ask here. I’ve been wondering what Islam teaches about what happens to people who aren’t Muslim. Some friends of mine who also aren’t Muslim have told me that Islam says non-believers will be punished in Hell forever for not accepting the faith, but I figured it’s better to hear it from those who actually study and practice Islam. Also, if you could point me to some good resources to learn more about Islam, I’d really appreciate it. I was thinking about getting a Quran to read, but I’m not sure where to find a reliable one.
