UN considering draft resolution for international force for Gaza - a Muslim perspective
As-salāmu ʿalaykum - The US has reportedly circulated a UN Security Council draft that would set up an international force to operate in Gaza.
According to reports, the resolution would give participating countries a mandate to help govern Gaza and provide security for the territory. The force might be set for about two years, with the chance to extend.
At least four Muslim-majority countries have shown interest in joining - Indonesia, Egypt, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The plan would coordinate with international ceasefire and peace efforts.
Previous coverage suggested the US, UK and France were pushing a draft that would allow an international stabilisation force to take on wide security responsibilities in Gaza as Israeli forces pull back from key areas. One expected role is assistance with disarmament of militant groups and helping build local security capacity.
Turkey’s foreign minister has said nations are working on a UN mandate for such a stabilisation force and that any troop commitments will be decided once a clear framework is agreed. He also suggested Hamas might be open to handing over administration to a Palestinian committee, though details remain limited.
Jordan’s foreign minister warned that real stability will be hard to achieve while parts of the enclave remain occupied, and he called for a clear timetable for withdrawal.
US officials have said any international force should be composed of countries acceptable to Israel. Egypt has indicated it would support and could commit troops under defined conditions. Cairo has stressed the need for a UN mandate that clearly specifies the troops’ mission, focusing on peacekeeping and training Palestinian police.
Meanwhile, worries continue about how durable any ceasefire will be, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
May Allah grant peace and safety to innocent civilians and guide leaders to work for a just, lasting solution that protects human life and dignity.
