Two Suspects in Religious Blasphemy Case Over Alcohol Promo with Quran Recitation Detained
Polda Metro Jaya has officially detained two suspects in an alleged religious blasphemy case during the 'The Sounds Project' music festival in Ancol, North Jakarta. The two, a man with the initials E and a woman with the initials R, were handcuffed and wearing detainee clothes as they were escorted to the detention center on Thursday (8/13/2026).
This case started from a viral video of a challenge to recite Quranic verses used to promote alcoholic beverages. The event organizer has apologized and emphasized that they do not tolerate religious blasphemy or actions that offend SARA (ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group relations).
The handling of the case was transferred from the North Jakarta Police to the Criminal Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the act was inappropriate and offended Muslims, and hoped the police would apply Articles 300 and 301 of the National Criminal Code fairly.
