The Last Days of Doctor Icha, Suspected of Suffering Depression After an ER Incident
Doctor Eliza Princila Utami Pakaenoni, or Doctor Icha, passed away on Friday (26/6/2026) in Kupang City after experiencing severe psychological distress. The young doctor, who was on duty at the ER of Leona Hospital, North Central Timor, NTT, is believed to have fallen into depression following an incident involving the treatment of a snake bite patient on 13 June 2026.
At the time, she was handling a 19-year-old referral patient who was a family member of a local legislator. Doctor Icha had acted according to SOP, including consulting with a specialist, and explained that the patient did not yet need a particular anti-venom serum and that the hospital did not have the requested stock. This explanation was reportedly rejected with a raised voice, including by the legislator in question.
Colleagues and family said Doctor Icha looked shocked and cried after the incident, and her condition kept deteriorating until her passing. The snake bite patient was later discharged at the family's request on 16 June 2026 and has reportedly recovered.
