The Correct Spelling and Meaning of 'Masyaallah' According to KBBI and Transliteration Guidelines
As Muslims, confusion often arises about the correct way to write the phrase of praise 'Masya Allah'. According to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the proper standard spelling is 'Masyaallah' (written as one word) using the letters 'sya', not 'sha'. This is important because a difference in spelling can change the meaning.
In Arabic, this phrase is written as 'مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ' (Ma sya'allah). The Arabic-Latin transliteration guidelines from the Ministry of Religion and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Indonesia state that the hijaiyah letter ش (syin) is transcribed as 'sy'.
The phrase 'Masyaallah', which means 'What Allah has willed', is recommended to be said when one feels amazed or in awe, as a reminder that all beauty and extraordinary events occur by the will of Allah SWT. This recommendation is based, among other things, on QS. Al-Kahf verse 39.
