Saudi Arabia Releases List of Diseases That Hinder Hajj Permit Approval
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health, together with the local Public Health Authority, has released a list of serious medical conditions that can be grounds for denying permission to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. This policy is affirmed as part of efforts to protect the safety of pilgrims in the Holy Land. The conditions include advanced-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis, advanced heart failure, liver cirrhosis, severe mental disorders, dementia, advanced age with a frail physical condition, and pregnancy in the final three months.
Additionally, the Saudi government has also set mandatory vaccination requirements for prospective pilgrims. The meningococcal meningitis vaccine is a primary requirement, with the quadrivalent dose needing to be received at least 10 days before the start of the Hajj rites. The COVID-19 vaccine remains recommended, especially for vulnerable groups, with the latest dose administered after January 1, 2025. The seasonal influenza vaccine is also mandatory in anticipation of a surge in respiratory illnesses during the Hajj season.
This policy emphasizes that physical preparedness is an important condition for performing the Hajj pilgrimage, which requires high endurance. With strict health standards, it is hoped that every pilgrim can perform the fifth pillar of Islam safely, comfortably, and with devotion.
