Saudi Arabia Quietly Rallies International Coalition to Counter Houthi Blockade in the Red Sea
Saudi Arabia is quietly seeking international support and putting together a coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen's Houthi group. Two official sources said the coalition's makeup is still being discussed with dozens of countries, while Saudi Arabia's International Communication Center has not commented yet.
The Houthi group imposed a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia on July 20, in response to what they call a siege by Saudi Arabia on Yemen-a claim Saudi Arabia denies. Since then, the Houthis have launched attacks on Saudi tankers and cargo ships in the Red Sea.
The Saudi military struck back by pounding Houthi military facilities at the Hodeidah port in Yemen. This blockade opens up a new front in regional tensions that could potentially disrupt global energy supplies.
