Polda Metro Jaya Names 4 Suspects in Quran Memorization Challenge for Alcohol Case
Polda Metro Jaya has named four people as suspects in a case involving a challenge to memorize Quran verses in exchange for alcoholic drinks (miras) at The Sounds Project music festival in Ancol, North Jakarta. Two suspects, RES and AK, have been detained for 20 days at the Polda Metro Jaya Detention Center.
The incident occurred on Sunday (9/8/2026) around 10:30 PM WIB. Suspect RES was working as an MC at an alcohol booth. Suspects I and AK allegedly challenged visitors to recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Ad-Dhuha in exchange for a bottle of alcohol, and then suspect M recited Surat Ad-Dhuha through a loudspeaker. Recordings of the activity circulated widely on social media.
Police have examined five complainants and several witnesses, and seized evidence in the form of five flash drives and the suspects' clothing. The suspects are charged under Article 300 and/or Article 301 of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code. Investigators will also examine the event organizer, booth staff, and involve digital forensics experts, Islamic religious experts from MUI and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as well as other experts.
Polda Metro Jaya's Head of Public Relations, Police Commissioner Budi Hermanto, urged the public to remain calm and not re-share the content with provocative narratives. Police ensure that the case is handled professionally and objectively.
