Pakistan keeps Indian planes out of its skies until Nov. 24 - a quick update
As-salamu alaykum - quick update and a prayer for safety for everyone affected. Pakistan has once again extended its ban on Indian aircraft, now in place through Nov. 24, an official notice shows, as tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors remain high after a fierce four-day conflict in May that left at least 70 people dead on both sides.
The restriction first started on Apr. 24 amid a string of retaliatory steps from both countries following an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi blamed on Pakistan. Islamabad denied involvement and asked for an open international investigation into the strike that killed 26 tourists. In response, India struck several targets inside Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, leading to heavy exchanges of missiles, drones and artillery until a US-brokered ceasefire came into effect on May 10.
The Pakistan Airports Authority issued a NOTAM saying Pakistani airspace is not available for aircraft registered in India or planes owned, operated or leased by Indian carriers. This is the sixth extension of the ban, which has forced Indian airlines to take longer routes, raising fuel use, travel time and costs.
Air India, which flies many routes to Europe and North America, warned in May the detours could add roughly $600 million in expenses over a year and has asked the Indian government for compensation.
May Allah protect the innocent and bring about a peaceful, just resolution soon.
