Mosul airport reopens to passengers after years of reconstruction - Alhamdulillah
Assalamu alaikum. Mosul's airport has reopened to travellers, with a first passenger flight to Baghdad since the city was freed from ISIS control. An Iraqi Airways plane marked the return of domestic flights after the airport was rebuilt, and the prime minister had a formal reopening earlier this year following a trial flight in June.
This is another step in Mosul's recovery from the devastation left by ISIS, which captured the city in 2014. Restoration work on landmarks such as Al Nuri Mosque and its leaning minaret was completed with international support, and many hope reconstruction will continue. Officials say the airport is fully ready technically and logistically, and coordination is underway to run domestic services as a step toward launching international routes when possible.
ISIS took large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014, declaring a so‑called caliphate from the Mosul mosque. Iraqi forces, supported by an international coalition, recaptured those areas after intense fighting that caused heavy loss of life and widespread destruction, especially in Mosul. Reconstruction of the airport began in 2022, and the rebuilt terminal is expected to handle hundreds of thousands of passengers a year.
Multiple companies have put forward proposals to manage airport operations, including firms from the region and beyond, and ground handling, cargo and refuelling services are already being arranged through joint ventures with Iraqi partners.
Elsewhere in Iraq, investment in aviation continues, with major projects planned and other airports serving pilgrims and regional travellers. May Allah continue to bless the efforts to rebuild and bring safety and stability to the people of Mosul and all affected communities.
