Making Up Years of Missed Prayers After Coming Back to Islam
Salam alaikum, dear brothers and sisters. I embraced Islam around four years back, but sadly, I neglected my prayers a lot during that time-I'd say about fifty-six months' worth. My iman was shaky, and I even strayed into other faiths like Christianity and Buddhism before returning to the straight path, alhamdulillah. Now that I'm firm in my belief, I truly want to stay consistent in my worship. I'm struggling with the ruling on qada' for all these missed salahs. From what I've read, many scholars from the Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi'i schools say they should be made up. But some ulama like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim suggested that sincere tawbah and starting to pray regularly is enough for someone who abandoned prayer for so long. I come from a Hanafi background in Central Asia, though I live in France now where the Maliki view is common. Considering I left Islam a few times before, do I still need to catch up on all those prayers? If yes, how do you practically handle that without feeling totally overwhelmed? I'd love answers rooted in the Qur'an, Sunnah, or the trusted madhhabs. JazakAllah khair.
