Let's Embrace Taking a Pause During Conversations
Ever find yourself jumping in too fast and regretting what you said? Maybe it happens in a heated discussion or when someone's pushing you to speak up. Sometimes people demand an immediate response, and under that pressure, some might even be tempted to lie. So, let's make it normal to say things like: 'Just a second, let me think how to put this,' 'Give me a moment, please, I'm gathering my thoughts,' or simply 'Hmm, one moment.' There's nothing strange about doing this-it gives you time to choose your words carefully, avoid tricky situations, or if needed, use tawriyyah (a form of indirect speech that avoids lying). For example, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reminded us to guard our tongues, since our words can have serious consequences. According to scholars like Imam An-Nawawi, tawriyyah can be permissible when there's a legitimate benefit and no harm-so take that pause wisely. It's a small step to better communication!
