Family re-detained after release, court blocks deportation
Hayam El Gamal and her five children, who were held in US immigration detention for 10 months, were re-arrested just days after a judge ordered their release. Despite a federal court order barring their deportation, immigration authorities moved to deport them, prompting another emergency court order to halt it. Their detention, described by lawyers and lawmakers as illegal and cruel, has been linked to an attack by the mother's ex-husband, though there's no evidence the family was involved or aware of it. Senator Durbin suggested the targeting is because they are Arab Muslim immigrants, not due to any risk they pose.
