Israeli Forces Capture 20 Turkish Citizens in Attack on Gaza Humanitarian Flotilla
Israeli forces captured 20 Turkish citizens during a raid on ships of the Gaza humanitarian mission, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) II, on Wednesday night (4/29/2026). The Turkish delegation reported that Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, over 900 km from Gaza, near Greek waters. The raid took place off the coast of Crete, Greece, with more than 170 activists detained and taken to Israel.
Prior to the raid, Israeli forces disrupted the fleet's communications, cutting off contact with other ships and the GSF mission center. Of the 21 ships that were surrounded, 17 managed to escape and entered Greek waters to seek protection. This mission was carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, similar to the efforts of the first GSF last year, which was also thwarted.
This humanitarian flotilla involved around 1,000 activists from about 70 countries using 50 ships, with the aim of breaking the military blockade and opening a sea-based humanitarian corridor to Gaza.
