Indonesia Proposes a Single Global Halal Standard to Strengthen Muslim Economy
Indonesia is pushing for a single global halal standard to unify certification systems across countries and strengthen the position of Muslim nations in the halal economy. BPJPH head Ahmad Haikal Hasan, at the D-8 Halal Expo Indonesia 2026, called for a mutual agreement so that halal standards can apply across borders. "Halal must be united, connected, and strong, because halal is about togetherness. That's why halal needs a single standard, just like ISO standards," he said. This move is expected to integrate halal product trade and make Muslim countries key players, not just markets.
Right now, global halal production is still dominated by non-Muslim countries like China, Brazil, and the US. Indonesia sees a unified standard as the key to competitiveness. As a first step, the D-8 countries already have a mutual recognition agreement on halal certification. Next, BPJPH will invite 70 countries to discuss a global halal standard at a meeting in Jakarta this September, aiming to build an integrated system with a single internationally recognized logo.
