Embracing Islam as a New Muslim
For the past couple of years, I’ve been casually curious about Islam. Recently, I married a Muslim man (a beautiful coincidence), and my fascination has been growing deeper with each passing day. He’s always offered to teach me whenever I mentioned my interest, but I’m often shy to ask. Still, when he shares bits about the faith, I listen with all my heart. Today, I finally started reading the Qur’an, but I’m struggling to understand it. I also have some personal inner battles, as I’m a trans person, and I worry about how others might perceive me. I’d love to visit a mosque to learn more, but I’m not sure how to begin or what to bring as a head covering. I’m also unsure how to memorize the Arabic for prayer. Alhamdulillah, there are many masjids nearby since I live close to a large Muslim community, so distance isn’t an issue. But I do worry that people might think I’m doing this just for my husband. He’s told me how happy he is that I’m interested in his deen, but he insists it must be entirely my choice and never pressures me-which I truly don’t feel pressured; I’m just a naturally anxious soul. I’d be so grateful for any guidance you can share. May Allah bless you.
