Seeking Islam as a Native American – Need Advice and Support
Assalamu alaikum everyone, I’m reaching out for some guidance and also to see if there are other Natives, especially Navajos, who are Muslim or exploring Islam. A bit about me: Islam has been on my mind for about a year and a half now. At first, I resisted it because I come from a very traditional family that practices our cultural ways, and I was a strong believer in that too. Honestly, I was scared when I started feeling this pull. But I realized my heart was set on Allah when my old prayers stopped feeling the same, and whenever something good, scary, or heavy happened, my mind went straight to Allah. I still cherish our stories and customs, but in less than two years, I’ve found more peace, love, and trust with Allah than I ever did with our traditions. I tried diving back into our ceremonies, hoping I’d feel that old connection again, but it just didn’t come. I’ve mostly accepted where I’m at now, though I’m still nervous about what others will think. My only support system is my closest friends, who are Muslims-they’re the ones who brought me nearer to Islam without any pressure. I got curious back in 2024 but was just starting out. Then in 2025, before Ramadan, I asked if I could join them in fasting and learn a bit more. I haven’t taken my shahada yet but plan to when things are safer. Right now, my family situation makes it tough-I’m afraid they wouldn’t accept me, and I risk being kicked out. I could really use some advice on: * Learning Islam properly. I’ve mostly picked up bits from TikTok and Instagram, and I downloaded a Quran app, but I can’t get physical books without getting caught. What’s a good, structured way to study without raising suspicion? * Reverting with a strict family. The nearest mosque is far, and my family tracks my location and checks where I go. We also practice traditions that involve shirk. How can I manage this? * Helping my family understand. I once thought my parents might be open, but when we talked about a relative who converted to Christianity, they told me never to change my religion. Lastly, are there any Native or Navajo Muslims out there who can relate? I’d love to connect and hear your stories. Jazakum Allahu khayran for any help.
