Ustaz Das’ad Latif Demands Legal Action for Case of Quran Verses Used as Booze Ticket
Ustaz Das’ad Latif urged authorities to take legal action over a case where Quran recitation was used as a gimmick to promote alcoholic drinks. He hopes this incident will be the last. “It’s been getting worse. I hope there will be legal action, and that this is the last time,” he said.
The case started from a viral video of a woman reciting Surah Ad-Duha at a music festival sponsor booth to get free drinks. Netizens and MUI strongly condemned the act. MUI Fatwa Head Prof KH Asrorun Niam Sholeh stated the action cannot be justified religiously, morally, ethically, or legally, as it degrades the sanctity of the Quran.
The Sounds Project organizers expressed anger, condemned the incident that was beyond their control, and had reprimanded the relevant sponsor. An internal evaluation is underway to prevent similar incidents. The public is still waiting for an explanation from Newport and OT Group about who devised the challenge.
