Death Toll from Venezuela Earthquake Reaches 920, Fifty Thousand Missing
The earthquake disaster in Venezuela has left 920 people dead and over fifty thousand still missing. The coastal area of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, suffered the worst damage with apartment buildings, neighborhoods, and public facilities collapsing.
UN Humanitarian Aid chief Tom Fletcher said the rescue operation is extremely complex due to the vast affected area, aftershocks, and unstable building conditions. Many victims' families and volunteers are forced to search manually because of limited heavy equipment.
The public is starting to show anger over the government's slow response. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez was jeered while visiting affected areas in Caracas, as residents shouted protests over the lack of aid.
Rescue teams from various countries, including Spain, Switzerland, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States, have been deployed. However, the chances of finding survivors are shrinking, and efforts are now focused on recovering bodies.
