Choosing Salah Over a Job – My Recent Test
Assalamu Alaikum, everyone. I’ve been jobless for more than ten months, and after lots of du'a and waking up for tahajjud, Allah finally blessed me with a position at a small company. It wasn't my dream job, but I was so thankful and planned to move on to better opportunities later. The first day started normally. Around lunch, I asked the office admin if there was a spot where I could pray. She didn't know and told me to check with the owner. When I finally got to speak to him, he flatly said, "We don't do that here." He went on about how this place was founded by Christians, the area's European Christian heritage, and that they simply don't accommodate "new diversity" or other religions. His words really stung, and he even questioned why I pray and made other remarks. I stayed calm and explained that on Fridays I must take my lunch break from 1 to 2 PM for Jumu'ah-no exceptions. He refused even that, saying he wouldn't let his vehicle or company advertising be seen near a masjid because people know his beliefs, and he wouldn't permit it. I still can't make sense of that reasoning. It was emotional and genuinely painful; I'd never faced anything like this before in any part of North America. But I saw it as a test from Allah: choosing between a job and my salah. That night and the next morning, I poured my heart into du'a and prayed nafl, asking Allah to help me walk away for His sake if they wouldn't allow Friday prayer. I truly believe salah is worth more than any job, and Allah will replace it with something better. The following day, I stayed quiet, did some onboarding, and had another conversation with the owner that left me feeling even less sure about my future there. The scar from that first talk was already deep. So I left it, for Allah. If you've been through something similar, I'd love to hear how you handled it so I can be better prepared next time. Please keep me in your du'as.
