BMKG and BRIN Warn of Potential Strong El Nino, Predict Longer Dry Season
The El Nino phenomenon, predicted to reoccur, is drawing attention. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explains that El Nino has the potential to affect seasonal patterns and rainfall in Indonesia. Although the term 'Godzilla El Nino' referring to a very strong intensity is circulating, the Head of the Climate Variability Analysis Division at BMKG, Indra Gustari, emphasized that this term is not an official scientific category.
Based on BMKG's forecast as of April 2026, the likelihood of a very strong category El Nino emerging is relatively small, below 20 percent. However, Indra reminded the public to remain vigilant because this year's dry season is predicted to arrive earlier and last longer than normal. This forecast was delivered through the official BMKG YouTube channel on Saturday (April 11, 2026).
Meanwhile, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also predicts the potential for a combination of a strong El Nino with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in the coming months. This combination could prolong and intensify the aridity of the dry season. El Nino itself is a phenomenon of warming sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that impacts Indonesia's climate.
