Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo Resigns, Economists Suspect Political Pressure
Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo has resigned mid-term, with his tenure originally set to end in May 2028. Bhima Yudhistira, Executive Director of the Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS), lamented the decision and suspects political pressure was at play. He noted that pressure on the monetary sector has been felt since the rupiah weakened in late 2025.
Bhima explained that fiscal issues-such as the widening state budget deficit, large-scale projects with flawed planning, weakening tax revenues, and rising government debt-have spooked investors. Yet, BI has been seen as the main scapegoat for the erosion of investor confidence and the rupiah's depreciation.
The resignation is also linked to revisions of the P2SK Law and the PFII Law, which are seen as curtailing BI's authority in overseeing and regulating foreign exchange flows. Bhima argued that fiscal authorities' intervention in monetary affairs has gone too far and is no longer a form of synergy.
