Aliens, Hajj, and Madurese Comedy! Bayu Skak's Foufo Movie Hits Theaters July 9
Sci-fi comedy film Foufo, directed by Bayu Skak, will hit theaters starting July 9, 2026. Surabaya is the first city to hold a special screening as a nod to the city's role in the production.
The story revolves around Muslim (Tretan Muslim), a young Madurese scrap collector struggling to pay for his mom Saiqona's hajj. An unexpected encounter with an alien named Foufo brings hope, but Foufo's energy runs low as the hajj payment deadline approaches, forcing Muslim to choose between his mom's dream and Foufo's safety.
This film blends comedy, family drama, and Madurese culture. The production involved local talent through an open casting call that drew over 2,500 participants, with 80 percent of the cast coming from those auditions. Surabaya-based animation studio Hompimpa helped develop the alien character Foufo.
For Tretan Muslim, this is his first time as the lead, using three languages: Madurese, Indonesian, and the Surabaya dialect of Javanese. Siti Kam (63), who plays Saiqona, makes her acting debut. After the press conference, the special screening at Kaza Mall Surabaya was a hit, with tickets sold out.
