Why do Muslims read the Quran in Arabic if they don’t understand it?

Assalamu alaikum. I've noticed a lot of Muslims reciting the Quran in Arabic, even when they don't speak the language. I always thought the Quran was meant to be understood, not just read. When I ask about this, people tell me it's the proper way and shows respect. I still wonder, though-shouldn't understanding be more important than just reciting sounds? Maybe there's wisdom I'm not seeing.
