Viral Quran Challenge with Alcohol Prize, Ustaz Rifky: Don't Let This Slide
Ustaz Rifky Ja’far Thalib has strongly condemned a Quran memorization challenge that offered alcoholic drinks as prizes at the Newport booth during The Sounds Project festival. He believes using sacred verses to promote haram products should be dealt with legally.
Rifky compared this case to insults against Pancasila, emphasizing that the Quran deserves even greater protection. He also pointed out participants who were willing to recite holy verses just to get alcohol, and expressed concern about the normalization of such phenomena.
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) had previously stressed that such actions degrade the sanctity of the Quran and are unjustifiable from religious, moral, ethical, and legal standpoints.
The organizers of The Sounds Project condemned the incident, stating it was beyond their control, and have reprimanded the sponsor in question while conducting an internal evaluation to prevent similar occurrences.
