Untag Surabaya Turns Liquid Waste from Fish Crackers into Organic Fertilizer with Dry Press Machine
Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Surabaya has put a Dry Press machine to work, turning liquid waste from fish cracker production in Srowo Village, Gresik, into amino acid-based liquid organic fertilizer (POC). The community empowerment program is led by lecturer Mahya Indra Tama, S.TP., M.T., along with students.
The activity on Tuesday (7/7) at BUMDesa Pahala included training on operating the machine, separating the waste, fermentation, and producing ready-to-use fertilizer. This appropriate tech transforms previously discarded waste into a product with economic value.
Mahya explained that fishery liquid waste still holds nutrients that can be extracted and fermented into fertilizer that’s good for plants. SME partner Muhammad Asykuri said he gained new knowledge and sees business opportunities from processing this waste.
The collaboration with the village government and BUMDesa is expected to be replicated at other fish processing hubs, promoting a circular economy, cutting pollution, and strengthening the sustainable competitiveness of SMEs.
