The Virtues and Recommendations for Reciting Surah Al-Waqi'ah
Surah Al-Waqi'ah is the 56th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 96 verses and classified as Makkiyah. It's often discussed for its virtues. In terms of language, 'Al-Waqi'ah' means 'The Inevitable Event' (the Day of Judgment), and this surah is also known among scholars as the 'Surah of Wealth' (al-Ghina). Its main content describes the events of the Day of Judgment and divides humanity into three groups: ashabul yamin (the companions of the right), ashabul syimal (the companions of the left), and as-sabiqun (the foremost in faith), each receiving different rewards based on their faith and deeds.
There are recommendations to recite Surah Al-Waqi'ah, including after the Fajr prayer, based on several narrations and practices. The morning time is considered full of blessings, in line with the supplication of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). A narration from Jabir bin Samurah mentions that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) sometimes recited this surah during the Fajr prayer. Among Muslims, it's a common practice to recite Surah Al-Waqi'ah three times after Fajr and three times after Isha.
The benefits of reciting Surah Al-Waqi'ah include protection from poverty, as per a hadith from Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud narrated by the Prophet (SAW), with an emphasis on poverty of the heart and instilling the trait of contentment. This surah also serves as a reminder of the severity of the Day of Judgment, and is believed to have other merits such as easing the departure of the soul, providing intercession, and strengthening Islamic brotherhood when recited in congregation. The explanation of its verses reminds believers to constantly seek guidance and abundance in sustenance during worship.
