The Meaning of China–Tajikistan Cooperation Goes Beyond Bilateral Ties
Tajik President Emomali Rahmon paid a state visit to China on May 11–14, becoming the first foreign head of state to visit after the Labor Day holiday. The visit grabbed attention amid strengthening China–Central Asia cooperation, and it’s hoped to bring new hope for deepening bilateral relations and more sustainable regional collaboration.
Tajikistan has high geopolitical strategic value and is one of the key countries along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Bilateral trade between China and Tajikistan in 2019 hit USD 728 million, up 148 percent from the year before, with cumulative Chinese company investments reaching USD 990 million. During this visit, the two countries again signed a series of cooperation documents covering bilateral ties and regional collaboration.
Since 2014, aligning the BRI with Tajikistan’s national development strategy has produced a lot of cooperation achievements. The two countries previously upgraded their relationship to a future-oriented strategic partnership. Amid global uncertainty, this cooperation opens up new opportunities for Tajikistan’s integration into the Asian community and pushes progress in politics, economy, trade, and energy.
This visit was the first meeting of the two heads of state since the pandemic, signaling a normalization of pandemic control and a commitment to keep strengthening ties. Overall, China–Tajikistan cooperation isn’t just important bilaterally-it also brings strategic value for connectivity, stability, and deepening collaboration in the Central Asian region.
