The Complete Declaration of Faith (Shahada) with Its Meaning and Virtues in Islam
The Shahada is the first pillar of Islam and is the primary condition for someone embracing the Islamic faith. This declaration is also recited in the call to prayer (adhan), the second call to prayer (iqamah), and during every obligatory and voluntary prayer.
The complete Shahada in Arabic text is: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ. Its meaning: "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Shahada consists of two parts: the testimony of monotheism (acknowledging the oneness of Allah SWT) and the testimony of prophethood (acknowledging that Prophet Muhammad SAW is His messenger).
The virtues of sincerely reciting the Shahada and following it with righteous deeds include: being a requirement for entering Islam, a guarantee of Paradise for those who utter it at the end of their lives, an eraser of sins, protection from the Fire of Hell, and receiving the intercession of Prophet Muhammad SAW on the Day of Judgment. As the Messenger of Allah SAW said in a hadith reported by Bukhari and Muslim: "Whoever says 'There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah'... then Allah will forbid the Fire for him."
