Hey guys, I'm curious about something - what truly defines someone as a Muslim?

Assalamualaikum. So, I'm Hindu by faith, alhamdulillah I've been blessed with many Muslim friends and I've noticed that they all practice their deen in unique ways. It got me thinking-what's the core thing that makes a person a Muslim? Is it just the practices, or something deeper? I'd love to hear some thoughts.
