Tension in the Strait of Hormuz: IRGC Reportedly Opens Fire on Merchant Ships

BANDA ACEH – Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is reported to have fired upon at least two merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, heightening tensions in this vital global energy trade route. Although all crew members are reported safe, this action has caused a number of ships to turn around in nearby Omani waters. The IRGC re-imposed restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday (18/4/2025), after having fully opened it to commercial shipping on Friday. This move is Iran's response to an American naval blockade, with Tehran threatening a total closure of the strait and stating that ships passing through without permission may become military targets. Iran's Supreme National Security Council stated it would continue to monitor ship traffic until the war with the US ends and peace is achieved.
