Social Ministry Moves Fast to Handle NTT Earthquake, Resident Safety a Priority
Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) confirmed that the Social Ministry is continuing to work on handling the impact of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in NTT, Saturday (15/8) morning. The main focus is on rescue, protection of affected residents, meeting the basic needs of evacuees, and speeding up victim data collection.
As of 15.40 WIB, the earthquake affected Nagekeo, Sikka, Manggarai, West Manggarai, and Ende Regencies. Around 2,000 people were affected, 38 people died, 6 were injured, and 2 were buried. Figures are still being verified. Evacuation points have been prepared in Mbay, Maumere, Borong, and Ruteng.
The Social Ministry is mobilizing logistical aid worth IDR 4.52 billion from Efata Kupang Center, the NTT Social Service Warehouse, and the Bekasi Central Warehouse. The aid includes tents, camp beds, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, clothing, shower kits, and two field public kitchens. Compensation for the heirs of deceased victims will be distributed after verification is complete.
Gus Ipul urged the public to be alert to aftershocks, stay away from damaged buildings, and follow official information. The earthquake occurred at 04.58 WIB, with the epicenter in the sea 30–38 km northeast of Mbay, at a depth of 15 km. The tsunami early warning has been lifted.
