Saudi Arabia No Longer Permits U.S. Military Use of Air Bases for 'Project Freedom' Operations
Saudi Arabia has firmly denied granting permission for the United States military to use its air bases or airspace to support 'Project Freedom,' a maritime escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz initiated by President Donald Trump. This move by Riyadh was prompted by concerns that the U.S. military might trigger a counterattack from Iran and spark a broader military conflict.
As a form of protest and self-protection, Saudi Arabia informed the U.S. that they would not allow U.S. fighter jets or support aircraft to depart from Prince Sultan Air Base. Just 36 hours after the announcement via social media, Trump temporarily halted the mission, while Kuwait also took similar action by revoking the rights for the U.S. to use its airspace and airspace.
Conditions in the Strait of Hormuz are currently reported to be very tense, with maritime traffic halted for three consecutive days. Although the military tensions were announced on April 18, Iran is now blockading the entire strait, causing uncertainty for commercial vessels. Meanwhile, the White House has been unable to confirm when or whether Project Freedom will resume, with the main focus now shifting to seeking a resolution.
