Salat Lihurmatil Waqti: Meaning, Evidence, Reasons, Intention, and Procedure
Salat lihurmatil waqti is a prayer you do however you can when you can’t meet the valid conditions or pillars of prayer because of an excuse or emergency. Literally, lihurmatil waqti means 'to honor the time.' This covers situations like not finding water or dust to cleanse yourself (faqiduth thahuraini), not being able to face the qibla, or not being able to do ruku' and sujud properly.
The evidence for this prayer comes from a narration by Sayyidah Aisyah RA about a companion who kept praying without wudu because he couldn’t find water, then Allah SWT revealed the verse on tayammum. Salat lihurmatil waqti is recommended to be done near the end of the prayer time, unless you’re sure the excuse won’t go away before the time runs out, then you can do it from the start.
The intention wording is adjusted to the fard prayer time, by adding 'lihurmatil waqti' (to honor the time). The procedure is done as best you can, like standing or sitting, with ruku' and sujud movements as you’re able. As for recitations, if you have minor hadas you can still read a surah after Al-Fatihah, but if you have major hadas you only recite the prayer’s pillars. Most Shafi’i scholars say this prayer must be repeated after things are back to normal, unless it was done on a vehicle perfectly, then it doesn’t need to be repeated.
