Reflection on the Story of Zayd ibn 'Amr - Assalamu Alaikum
Assalamu alaikum. If a person sincerely seeks the truth and the pleasure of Allah, even if they passed away before accepting Islam, Allah will deal with them justly - and who is a fairer Judge than Allah? This comes from the seerah and some hadith. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a man named Zayd ibn 'Amr, whom the Prophet knew from before prophethood. Zayd consistently rejected the idols worshipped by the people of Makkah, even refusing meat offered to those idols, and he died before Islam reached him. He asked people of different faiths - Jews, Christians, and the polytheists - and kept searching for the religion that would please Allah. Zayd ibn 'Amr used to make du'a asking Allah to guide him to the straight path. Today we say the verse “Guide us to the Straight Path” (Surah al-Fatiha) many times a day; maybe sometimes we don’t pause to think about it, but for those truly searching for meaning, that supplication speaks deeply to the heart. The lesson here is that humans have a natural inclination toward submission to Allah - not just the outward rituals, but the core state of submitting one’s will to the Creator. If someone genuinely seeks Allah, that search itself is a form of turning toward Him.
