Prayer for Pouring Water on Graves: Arabic, Latin, Meaning, Ruling, and Its Virtues

During a ziyarah, Muslims often pour water over a grave before praying. This tradition has a basis in Islam. When pouring, it's recommended to recite the prayer: "Allahummaj'al haadzal maa'a bardan wa salaaman fii qabrihi wasqi tsaraahu birahmatika yaa arhamar raahimiin," which means asking that the water becomes a coolness and peace for the occupant of the grave, and an outpouring of mercy from Allah SWT. According to scholars, pouring cold water on a grave is considered sunnah, as per the majority opinion of Shafi'i, Hanafi, and Hanbali scholars. However, it becomes makruh if impure water is used. Pouring rose water is also allowed as long as it's not excessive to the point of waste. Scattering flowers on a grave is deemed sunnah because fresh plants glorify Allah, and it's hoped they bring mercy to the deceased. The evidence for this practice is in a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud that the Prophet Muhammad SAW poured water on the grave of his son, Ibrahim. Additionally, a hadith narrated by Bukhari mentions that the Prophet SAW stuck a fresh palm frond on two graves to ease the punishment.
