Political solution is the only way to end Sudan's civil war, UAE adviser says - As-salamu alaykum
As-salamu alaykum. The UAE has reiterated the need for a political solution in Sudan after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces took control of El Fasher from the army.
The RSF announced they had captured the army’s last position in Darfur, at their El Fasher headquarters - a city where over 250,000 people need humanitarian help. The RSF and the regular armed forces have been fighting since April 2023.
Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed, said the army’s loss of El Fasher after a lengthy siege is “a moment that requires careful thought and realism,” and he stressed that “the political path is the only option to end the civil war.” May Allah protect the innocent.
Recently the US hosted a meeting with officials from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to push for a ceasefire. A senior White House adviser said the countries reaffirmed their commitment to prior statements and agreed to form a Joint Operational Committee to improve coordination on urgent priorities.
Dr Gargash added that this Quad statement and roadmap form an internationally backed framework for restoring stability, and warned that the dire humanitarian situation cannot bear more escalation.
In September, foreign ministers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt met with the US to discuss the war. A proposed peace plan suggested a three-month truce followed by a return to civilian rule that excludes the Muslim Brotherhood from power.
Army chief Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan said on TV that troops and allied fighters left El Fasher to spare the city and its people “systematic destruction and killing of civilians.” He said they agreed the forces should withdraw to protect remaining civilians and what’s left of the city, and he vowed to retake the city and RSF-held areas.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of worse days ahead after the fall of El Fasher, calling it “a terrible escalation” and saying the suffering in Sudan is unbearable. Officials urged the RSF to protect civilians and allow humanitarian assistance to continue.
This is a prayerful reminder that the people of Sudan need urgent help and wise political steps to stop the bloodshed. May Allah grant relief to those suffering and guide leaders toward a just and peaceful solution.
