Paying Zakat with a Credit Card: Is It Halal and Permissible?

The digital age makes paying zakat easy through transfers, e-wallets, even credit cards. But using a credit card raises questions, ‘cause it’s tied to debt and interest (riba), which Islam forbids. Allah SWT prohibits riba in Surah Ali Imran, verse 130. According to DSN-MUI Fatwa Number 54/DSN-MUI/X/2006, paying zakat with a sharia-compliant credit card is allowed. Sharia credit cards are free from riba, gharar, and maysir, and use contracts like kafalah, qardh, and ijarah that follow Islamic law. The conditions are: the wealth has met nisab and haul, and the cardholder can pay off the bill on time. Conventional credit cards can only be used in emergencies, paying before interest kicks in, but it’s not the main option.
