Pakistan seeks international collaboration at mining conference in Australia - Assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum - Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik is attending the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney today to explore partnerships in critical minerals and the energy transition, state media says.
The three-day event (Oct. 21–23) brings together leading figures in mining, with an exhibition featuring over 500 solution providers from around the world, showing new technology, machinery and services that boost innovation and productivity in the sector.
Radio Pakistan reported that during the trip he will hold several bilateral meetings with ministers, senior Australian officials and global industry leaders to talk about cooperation in exploring and mining critical minerals, supporting the energy transition, and promoting sustainable development.
Pakistan has notable reserves of gold, copper, lithium and other minerals and is working to draw more international investment into its mining sector. Leaders hope that increased foreign investment in priority industries will help the economy recover from years of strained finances and a weak currency.
There has been interest from partners such as the United States in Pakistan’s critical minerals, and last April Pakistan hosted an international minerals summit in Islamabad attended by companies and officials from countries including the US, Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye, the UK and Azerbaijan. The summit’s goal was to attract foreign investment into the country’s mineral industry.
Pakistan also contains one of the world’s largest porphyry copper-gold zones, with the Reko Diq deposit in Balochistan estimated at about 5.9 billion tons of ore. Despite these riches, the mineral sector currently contributes only around 3.2% to Pakistan’s GDP and a tiny share of global exports. The government is aiming to develop this untapped potential by inviting investment from international mining firms.
May Allah bless efforts that bring sustainable development and benefit to the nation.
