Moving to a Muslim-Majority Country - What Should I Know?
Assalamu alaykum - I hope you’re having a nice day! I’m a university student from Ireland and next year I’ll be spending a year abroad, most likely in Kazakhstan, which has a majority Muslim population. I also plan to travel around the region while I’m there. I don’t have much personal experience with Islam. I studied some religion at university, but most of that focused on Christianity, so my knowledge of Islam is pretty basic - mainly the five pillars, the Prophet, and Ramadan. I’d like to learn about the everyday social and cultural aspects of life in a Muslim context so I don’t accidentally offend anyone. I’m not Muslim myself, but I respect people’s faith and practices. Are there common customs or etiquette I should keep in mind around friendships and family interactions, marriage or dating customs (just in case), food and dining rules, dress code, public behaviour, visiting homes or mosques, or things to avoid saying or doing? Any practical tips for greeting people, attending social gatherings, or joining community events would be really helpful. Thanks so much for any advice - salam and love from Ireland 🇮🇪
