Ministry of Religious Affairs Launches AI Specifically for Islamic Education, Teachers Remain Central in Character Education
The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has officially introduced artificial intelligence (AI) specifically for Islamic Religious Education learning through the Smart PAI platform. This system only uses references from 40 official digital books of the ministry that have been academically validated, unlike other generative AI services.
Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar emphasized that digital transformation must be responded to so that religious education stays relevant for today's generation. Smart PAI integrates digital books, interactive classes, question banks, digital libraries, assessments, and an AI assistant whose sources are limited to official books to maintain material accuracy.
Director General of Islamic Education Amien Suyitno stressed that technology does not replace the role of teachers, especially in transferring values and character building. The books also integrate the Complete Qur'an Reading program and carry the Love Curriculum with five main values, as well as the seven habits of Great Indonesian Children.
The launch marks a shift in the direction of digitalization of Islamic religious education by building a learning ecosystem that connects curriculum, digital books, assessments, and AI in one platform. The ministry hopes this approach strengthens the quality and authority of religious material in the digital space without losing its foundation of values.
