Masha'Allah - Saudi ISEF winner joins Nobel laureate’s research team at UC Berkeley
Assalamu Alaikum - Alhamdulillah, good news from Riyadh: Saudi scholarship student Abdullah Al‑Ghamdi has joined the research group of Professor Omar Yaghi, the Saudi scientist awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, at the University of California, Berkeley.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, Abdullah is continuing his university studies while taking part in cutting‑edge work across chemistry, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Masha'Allah, he first made headlines by winning the Best Researcher Award at the 2019 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair - the best individual Saudi result in that contest - and has kept building his research path at a top global institution.
He’s working on projects like high‑throughput synthesis with robotic platforms, crystal analysis using X‑ray diffraction and advanced microscopy, plus molecular simulation and computational data analysis to speed up finding new materials. Abdullah has also published in respected journals such as Nature Synthesis and the Molecular Frontiers Journal, and is leading a project on a new gallium‑based zeolitic framework with possible uses in sustainability, energy and water.
Professor Yaghi praised him as one of the most outstanding undergraduates he’s worked with, noting his hard work, teamwork and strong research skills. Tahani Al‑Baiz, the Saudi cultural attaché to the US and Canada, welcomed the move as an example of what talent‑finding and development programs in the Kingdom can achieve, saying it reflects the goals of the Human Capacity Development Program.
May Allah grant him continued success and make his work beneficial.
