Israel and Lebanon Agree to 10-Day Ceasefire
US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire following talks in Washington, D.C. The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect starting at 5:00 PM EST on Thursday. Trump stated this agreement was reached after direct communication with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The meeting between Israel and Lebanon in Washington was the first in 34 years, involving US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump also instructed Vice President JD Vance, Rubio, and US military leaders to work together to promote lasting peace.
On the other hand, data from Lebanese health authorities shows the conflict since early March has killed more than 2,000 people and forced about 1.2 million citizens to flee. Although some Israeli officials were unhappy with the announcement before cabinet discussions, Netanyahu was said to have approved the ceasefire at Trump's urging. This agreement is hoped to be an initial step toward regional stability.
