Is Vaginal Discharge Considered Impure? Here’s the Ruling According to 4 Major Schools of Thought
Vaginal discharge is a natural fluid produced by the female organ to maintain cleanliness and moisture. In Islamic jurisprudence, scholars have different opinions on it. According to the Hanafi school, discharge from the outer part of the vagina is considered pure, while the inner part is still debated. The Maliki school deems it impure, while the Hanbali school considers it pure. The Shafi’i school elaborates: from the outer part it’s pure, from the deepest part it’s impure, and from the middle area it’s pure according to the strongest view.
If the source of the discharge is unknown, the juristic principle applies that certainty is not removed by doubt. Hence, the default ruling is that it’s pure until proven otherwise. Muslim women need not worry excessively in this case.
