Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un: Investigation Launched into Tragic Deaths of Children Linked to Harmful Cough Syrup in India
Assalamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,
It is with a heavy heart that we share news from India, where the authorities have begun a criminal investigation following the unfortunate deaths of at least 14 young children. These losses have been linked to the consumption of a cough syrup known as Coldrif Syrup, which was found to contain a dangerous toxin called diethylene glycol at levels far exceeding safe limits.
Most of these precious little ones were under five years old and fell ill with kidney failure shortly after taking the medicine. This tragedy adds to a series of similar incidents involving Indian-made cough syrups that have caused harm in various countries, including The Gambia, Uzbekistan, Cameroon, and previous cases in India.
The toxin, diethylene glycol, is harmful and can cause severe symptoms ranging from vomiting to acute kidney injury, which sadly can be fatal. The manufacturer, Sresan Pharma, along with a doctor who prescribed the syrup, have been held accountable by the authorities. This serves as a reminder of the immense responsibility borne by those involved in producing and prescribing medicines.
We pray to Allah (SWT) for the swift healing of those affected and for mercy upon the souls of the departed. May Allah guide the hearts of those responsible to act justly and ensure such tragedies do not happen again. We also ask for increased vigilance and adherence to safety standards in all healthcare products, to protect our communities.
Let us remember to make du'a for the families enduring this hardship and support efforts to prevent future harm. Truly, all life is in Allah's hands, and He is the best of planners.
Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
