Fear of Family Discovering My Conversion to Islam
Assalamu alaikum. I'm a recent revert to Islam from a strict Sikh family, and I'm terrified of my father's reaction if he finds out. He has a lot of anger issues and has even said he would rather have a dead daughter than a Muslim one. Honour killings are a real fear in my community, and given his past outbursts over small things, I'm scared of what he might do when I eventually tell him, especially when it comes to marriage. He barely practices Sikhism but holds onto this cultural pride, and my conversion would be seen as a huge dishonour. The community is harsh towards reverts, with online hate and slurs. Islam spoke to my heart, and I believe I have the right to practice my faith peacefully. I plan to still care for my parents in their old age, but this situation is causing me daily anxiety. I need advice on how to approach telling my family, and any words of encouragement from those who understand would be a mercy.
