Etiquette in the Mosque: Manners for Entering, Worshiping, and Prohibitions to Avoid
The mosque is the noble house of Allah SWT, where Muslims gather to worship, remember Allah, read the Quran, and seek knowledge. Every Muslim is encouraged to observe proper etiquette and manners within it as a form of respect and devotion. Before heading out, straighten your intention solely for Allah, wear clean and neat clothes, avoid disturbing odors, and walk calmly. When entering the mosque, step in with your right foot first and recite the supplication, then perform two rak’ahs of Tahiyatul Masjid prayer before sitting down.
While in the mosque, engage in plenty of worship like dhikr and Quran recitation, keep the place clean, and avoid loud talking or excessive joking. Don’t walk in front of someone who is praying, and if you get sleepy, it’s recommended to move spots. Prophet Muhammad SAW emphasized the importance of this etiquette, including the prohibition of spitting carelessly and the instruction to clean it up.
Some prohibitions in the mosque include: conducting business transactions, loudly announcing lost items, using the mosque as a shortcut without performing any worship, leaving after the adhan without a valid excuse, and reserving personal spots. By following these manners, a Muslim preserves the purity and honor of the house of Allah SWT.
